Albury Wodonga is made up of two inland Australian towns nestled on either side of the New South Wales and Victorian border. Throw a line overboard and try your luck catching a Murray Cod, which can grow to up to 1.8m in length and weigh a whopping 115kg. Kayaks and canoes are available to hire at different points along the river, and offer a unique way to explore the Murray and view the red earth cliffs that have been carved into the landscape by the flowing water. There are a large number of wineries and breweries in the region, many opening their cellar doors for wine tasting. The Rutherglen Winery Walkabout, in nearby Rutherglen, is a once a year event held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, where 21 different wineries open their cellar doors to participate in this festival of wine and food. Each winery offers something a little different whether it be exclusive tastings of rare vintages, live music or special breakfasts and meals. Transport can be organised from your accommodation in Albury or Wodonga and shuttle buses running throughout the day are available to transport you between participating wineries.
Dining
As with most wine producing regions, gastronomy plays an important role in the region. Many of the wineries boast exceptional restaurants and cafes using the superb fresh local produce along with locally produced wines.
