If your vision of an ideal holiday is sitting on the beach or in front of grand vistas with your sketchbook on your lap with the glorious sun on your back as you record the amazing landscape, here's a great place to do it: Menorca. Vacation on this island paradise and you'll be assailed by stunning scenery, beautiful buildings, colourful wildlife and even more colourful events - all of which make amazing subjects for artistic masterpieces.
Every artist knows that there's nothing like the inspiration of a different location to bring out their best: new environment brings out artistic juices, a new perspective and the amazement that drives artists to create!
What's there to sketch, draw or paint on Menorca? Vacation here and you'll be spoilt with many subjects to choose from! Here are a few!
Seascapes and landscapes
If you're a beach lover, make sure to pack an array of different blues in your paint palette for your Menorca vacation! With the sheer number of beaches on the small island, there is no end to the different scenes you can capture: turquoise seas against golden beaches; ultramarine waters against white sands; or navy blues against the charcoal grey cliffs of the coastal landscape.
Among the best scenes to paint is the stunning rugged, coastal landscape around Cap de Favaritx, with its black slate rocky outcrop (said to be the oldest part of the island) often battered by waves. For an excellent focal point, there's also a solitary lighthouse that accents the dramatic backdrop. For more peaceful subjects, make your way to two beautiful coves nearby: Cala Presili and Cala Tortuga.
If majestic landscapes are your style, pack your gear and head to to Barranc d'Algender - a spectacular gorge where a human settlement from as far as 2,000 years ago has been unearthed. You can choose any spot along the six-kilometre ravine that ends at the beautiful Cala Galdana beach.
Birds and Other Fauna
With its status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the island's spectacular bird habitats can help you fill your sketchbook with myriad works of art. One of the best places to start is the S'Albufera des Grau Nature Park, a 5,000-hectare nature preserve with a two kilometre long lagoon. The lagoon is the island's largest wetland habitat and home to a wide variety of birds, including breeding Egyptian Vultures, Booted Eagles, Peregrines and Rock Thrushes, as well as Herons (Gray and Squacco), Marsh Harriers, Sardinian Warblers, Moorhens, Little Egrets, Kestrels, Rock Doves, and more.
Staying around the towns will also yield a wonderful range of feathered subjects for artwork: House Sparrows are plentiful, as are Robins, Blackbirds, Goldfinches, Wood Pigeons, Gulls, Wagtails, Doves and more.
Flowers, Butterflies, People and More
There's no end of subjects to draw and paint on a Menorca vacation. Creative activities can't help but be productive, whether you're drawn to botanical illustrations, watercolours and acrylics of flowers and butterflies, or gesture drawings of people dancing in fiestas. Whatever you feel like creating, look around and be inspired.
